Three GLOBE-UNEP-GEF flagship reports presenting readiness assessments and recommendations for Nigerian legislators concerning the legislative and institutional framework of the Great Green Wall and its activities in Nigeria; the national implementation of Environmental Economic Accounting as a tool for sustainable national development planning; and Nigeria's national capacity on REDD+ governance and legislation were launched at the House of Representatives of Nigeria. The event which was chaired by Attendees examine one of the reportsthe Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Femi Gbajabiamila represented by the Minority Leader, Rt. Hon. Ndudi Elumelu, had in attendance legislators, representatives of Ministers, Heads of Agencies, experts, and other national and international stakeholders. 


Speaking during his welcome address, the President of GLOBE Nigeria, Rep. Sam Onuigbo affirmed that the research works have succinctly laid out recommendations on the legislative steps Legislators must take to strengthen the REDD+ programme and Great Green Wall Initiative in Nigeria, while ensuring that natural capital accounting data are factored into the country’s sustainable development plans. The lawmaker called on his colleagues to “make out time to read these reports, especially the recommendations made, and pick specific legal recommendations which they can help strengthen by sponsoring them as Bills or amendments to Bills. The GLOBE Secretariat will be handy to provide all the necessary technical support that will help us in getting this done.

 
In his response, the Speaker of the House, through Rt. Hon. Ndudi Elumelu, promised that the House will provide total support and ensure that the recommendations are fast tracked.Hon. Elumelu 


We urgently need action, and the House of Representatives will support that action,” Rt. Hon. Elumelu said. 


Earlier in his speech, the Head of Climate Change and Energy, West Africa of the Foreign and Commonwealth Development Office, Mr. Sean Melbourne, expressed delight at being present at the launch of the products which he said strengthen three key elements of climate change mitigation and adaptation and stressed that nature-based solutions are critical to the fight against climate change. 


The National Coordinator of REDD+ Nigeria, Dr. Moses Ama, on his part emphasised that the partnership with GLOBE Nigeria had been extremely helpful. “This is the type of partnership that we have always desired. Our burden has been how to bring in legislators to sit and understand the legislative challenges that we face. This is a journey that must be repeated,” Dr. Ama stated.
